Amen! You took the words right out of my mouth. I've struggled with all these same worries over the years. My daughter is now 19, almost 20. We never went to church because I was scarred for life by East Texas Baptists, but the Unitarian church always seems a bit lighter, for lack of a better word. I hate that you're taking a blogging break! I just discovered you!

Thank you for educating your kiddos and sticking to your heart felt mission of honoring the Earth....
My daughters 11 and 15 are now taking on their own crusades, something I am sure you will delight in as you kids get older! The don't fall to far from the tree after all.
As far as the junk candy, they both trade in most of what they collect and get some really good organic chocolate and a non food treat they wish for.
When they were younger it was giving the candy to the Great Pumpkin and it would gift them back.
YES, I would love to bypass the whole bad candy thing
and hold the vision of glorious treats given out by every household, but for now it has saved us ingesting GMO cornsyrup, hydrogenated oils, artificially colored, tainted "treats" by the bucket full. As for us we are passing out Yummy Earth Lollipops and Change for Unicef : ) Happy Halloween! Sandy Young

Boy do I feel your pain too. We went through the same thing and it was crazy...that nothing would really help. None of those shampoos (even w/ the toxins in them) got rid of all of them...they kept COMING BACK! UGH!...but they are finally gone, glad to say, but seems like generally speaking the problem is getting far worse every year. Even a new program from the NPA (National Pediculosis Assn. called S.C.R.A.T.C.H just came out teaching the nurses how to combat lice more effectively).

Yup, its getting worse. Sorry you had to go through it too...but you are in a BIG CLUB!

I am torn on this issue and truly don't know the right answer, but here is what my gut tells me.

While I think it's great to be open-minded and try all forms of spirituality, I think it can end up leaving you no where. No one religion is perfect and in waiting to find it, we can end up finding nothing. Is it better to pick one and create a foundation for spiritually in your children? If you select one to raise your children with, you can still expose them to others as well, just like you did when you were young by visiting friends' churches, temples and synagogues.

When they are old enough, they will either confirm the one they were raised with or choose a new one that is more in tune with their own spirituality. That being said, I think the love and understanding you obviously show your kids is the best way they can learn.
